Invited by D’Clinic Studios in Hungary, Noelle Ng participates in an overseas artist residency program in a town called Zalaegerszeg, to explore the possibilities in art creations and for cultural exchange with other artists.

About Noelle Ng

It is the last week of my artist in residence at D’clinic, I focus on transforming images of ‘Lily and male statues’ into acrylic painting; and also to plan for the exhibition at the end of my residence.

At first, I planned to show artworks made with three different mediums in the final exhibition, which includes 5 site-specific images of Lily and male statues, 5 acrylic paintings and the soft sculpture of Lily.  But I got one week left to work on the paintings, and only two were finished.  Nevertheless, it was good enough to depict my creative notion.

The exhibition was held in D’clinic Studio on Friday night.  It was a group exhibition with two other female artists of the program –  Ariel Cotton from New York and Claudia Maria from Peru, Ariel is a comic artist and Claudia makes video installation.

Audience were locals from different background and age groups.  We introduced our projects, and translator Gabor translated to Hungarian for us.  It was a valuable experience to communicate with the local public through my artwork.  The exhibition received  interests and support from the public, and another piece of news wrote about the project (Click here to read the news).

It was my first residency and I gained plenty of fruitful experiences from the trip.  During the whole project and process, D’clinic Studios provided tons of support – technical, research, material supply…, and they helped with photo shooting, media relations, and exhibition arrangement as well.  It is a very good platform for artists from different countries and cultures to exchange with one another.  I definitely recommend D’clinic’s program for those who love making art.  And I look forward to sharing my next journal in the future.

I made a soft sculpture after ‘Lily’ during the second week of my residency, I have finished with the production and the sculpture is ready to interact with the men statues in Zala.
Each statue has their own background and stories, and there is a reason for them to be built in the town.  Based on the original story the statues, I twisted and gave additional meanings to create new perspectives by using different objects, poses, and composition for each site-specific execution, and for each of the execution, I took photos for record.
The photo shooting was done at 5:30am to catch the best sunlight in the summer, and also to avoid the crowd.  People in Zala showed interests and the local newspaper reported the intervention and posted some photographs too (Click here to read the news).

During the 3rd week, I transformed the images of ‘Lily’ with other statues to another further level.  I tried to create a new background and circumstances in acrylic painting; this approach of appropriation suggested surreal, ironic and playful images with the statues.

The idea for my final project came up on the 4th day of my residency.

Traditional and contemporary statues are everywhere in Europe.  There is no exception in Zalaegerszeg, although it is a small town but it has 207 pieces of statues, from small ones to big ones, most of them are traditional ones but there are also some contemporary statues.

Most of the statues are famous people from the old days, such as the Kings, the nobles, poets… etc, and they are usually men.  They all look very serious like the classic statues.

The notion of the project is to breakaway from the stiff and serious statues.  I am making a female soft statue referencing one of the sculptures call ‘The leave knees’, it is a lady statue called Lily.  Lily is a very popular statue, and there are a lot of replicas, there is one in Zalaegerszeg in a sitting position as well.  The soft sculpture that I am working on will be duplicated according to her features in a contemporary approach.  At specific sites she will interact with 6 selected male statues, with different body gestures, in order to create a new perspective from the original.

I am busy getting materials, and research information about the statues, to think about the composition.  In the 2nd week of my residency, I focused in making the soft female sculpture, worked on pattern, sewing, and inner construction etc.

[Monday]

I had an orientation in the studio and the residency program for 3 weeks began.

Noelle1-14

Noelle1-12

For the past 2 days, I just walked around the small town to get inspirations.  And I took some time to make some simple artworks at studio, start up my creative engine.

Small works I’m working on:
(1) Electorcardiogram-like drawings
To document my reflections towards the place Zalaegerszeg.
This historical town, compared to Hing Kong, is a quiet place.  I began to notice that I am not too used to working at a quiet environment like it here.  I started to record my feelings with electorcardiogram-like drawings from the first day, I intended to do this throughout the program.  I am hoping to see if there are any changes.  I can imagine this could become like a landscape, of my heart, my feelings.
Noelle1-3
(2) Things and System
White grid washroom/bathroom ceramic seems universal object.
From the wall of the studio, I can tell that I was a laundry room.  I am still trying to consolidate this idea, but I am thinking to do something about the reality of ‘things’ and its need to get into a ‘system’ that exist in our norms.  ‘Things’ sometimes have to self-deconstruct and fit-in.  Just like the nature, ourselves and the ‘others’…
I am still getting inspired, will begin to work on a final project.  I will probably focus on forms/ materials/ concepts/ contexts…
